ABBOTTABAD: Senior Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader and international labour activist Basharat Awan has urged the party’s provincial and divisional leadership to strengthen internal unity and give greater recognition to long-serving ideological workers.

Speaking during a special discussion, Awan said the PPP remains one of Pakistan’s most popular political parties but internal groupings and factionalism have affected its organizational strength and public appeal.

He emphasized that workers who have spent time in prison, made sacrifices for democracy, and suffered personal and financial losses for the party should be acknowledged and included in the party’s decision-making process.

Calls for recognition of veteran workers

Awan said he joined the PPP in 1968, shortly after the party’s founding in 1967, and has remained committed to the vision of the party’s founder, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto.

According to Awan, many veteran party workers who played important roles during difficult periods are now being overlooked despite their contributions to the party and democratic movements.

He argued that ideological commitment should be valued over personal interests and warned that material-driven politics could weaken the party’s foundations.

Leadership urged to strengthen party organization

Awan said the party’s provincial and divisional leadership, including Provincial President Bacha Khan and other office-bearers, have an important role in revitalizing the organization and reconnecting with grassroots workers.

He added that if the leadership succeeds in strengthening party unity and organizational structures, the PPP could regain the political position it deserves.

The veteran leader stressed that empowering dedicated workers and addressing internal differences would be essential for the party’s future growth and effectiveness.
