ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday launched the Wazir-e-Azam Apna Ghar Program, a Rs3.2 trillion housing initiative to finance 500,000 homes across Pakistan over five years, targeting low- and middle-income families.
He said the program aims to expand homeownership, address an estimated housing shortage of around 10 million units, and support economic activity through construction and allied sectors.
Loan structure and rollout
Under the scheme, eligible applicants can access loans of up to Rs10 million to construct houses on plots of up to 10 marlas. The financing offers a 20-year repayment period, with a 5% markup for the first 10 years, followed by market rates.
For the first year, the government has allocated Rs321 billion to support 50,000 homes. Over five years, the program aims to finance 500,000 housing units nationwide.
Nationwide implementation
The initiative will be rolled out across all four provinces, as well as Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, with banks facilitating loan disbursement. Initial cheques were distributed among beneficiaries at the launch ceremony.
Economic impact and oversight
Officials say the program is expected to boost construction activity, generate employment, and support related industries.
The prime minister said he will personally review progress on a monthly basis to ensure timely implementation, while urging banks to actively support housing finance.
Housing and Works Minister Mian Riaz Hussain Pirzada said the program was developed through a dedicated task force, noting Pakistan’s housing shortfall of around 10 million units.
