A petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court challenging the federal government’s recent petrol price increase, seeking to have the latest rise in petroleum product prices declared unlawful.
The petition, submitted by the Judicial Activism Panel, argues that the government increased fuel prices without sufficient justification despite a decline in global petroleum prices. The case comes after the government announced higher prices for petrol, high-speed diesel, and kerosene, affecting consumers across Pakistan.
Petition Questions Fuel Pricing Mechanism
According to the petition, the federal government does not have a transparent mechanism for determining changes in petroleum prices. It contends that international oil prices have declined and that the latest increase is not supported by prevailing market conditions.
The petitioner has requested the court to declare the recent increase in petroleum product prices null and void.
Latest Fuel Prices
The federal government recently increased the price of petrol by Rs13.18 per litre, taking the new price to Rs310.71 per litre. High-speed diesel was raised by Rs13.80 per litre, bringing its new price to Rs323.30 per litre.
The government also increased the petroleum levy on petrol by Rs9.36 per litre. According to official figures cited in the petition, the levy now stands at Rs80 per litre, up from Rs70.36 per litre.
In addition, the price of kerosene was increased by Rs11.19 per litre, setting the new rate at Rs242.33 per litre.
Court Yet to Hear the Petition
