ISLAMABAD, September 13: The Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) has praised Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani for his leadership and contribution to global parliamentary diplomacy, particularly during the Second Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference held in Cambodia last month.
The appreciation was conveyed in a letter from ISC Secretary General Ek Nath Dhakal on behalf of the organisation and Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, according to the Senate Secretariat.
The letter acknowledged Gilani’s participation and contribution to the conference, held in Phnom Penh from August 26 to 28, and also recognised him as the Founding Chair of the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference.
The recognition highlights Pakistan’s growing engagement in parliament-to-parliament diplomacy at a time when legislative forums are increasingly being used to promote dialogue, cooperation and peaceful resolution of international disputes.
Gilani Pushes Pakistan’s Parliamentary Diplomacy
During his engagements with speakers, presiding officers and parliamentary leaders from different countries, Gilani stressed the importance of dialogue, mutual understanding and stronger institutional cooperation between legislatures.
The Senate Secretariat said his diplomatic outreach has focused on strengthening parliamentary relationships beyond conventional government-to-government channels and creating greater space for lawmakers to contribute to international cooperation.
The ISC-2 conference was held under the theme “Solidarity for Peace and Shared Prosperity — Strengthening International Law and Resolving Conflicts Peacefully.”
Parliamentary leaders attending the gathering discussed international peace, multilateral cooperation, respect for international law and mechanisms for resolving disputes through dialogue rather than confrontation.
Pakistan Reaffirms Support for Dialogue and International Law
Addressing the conference, Gilani reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for peaceful dispute resolution, multilateral cooperation and respect for international law.
He also emphasised the role of parliamentary institutions in strengthening communication between countries, particularly during periods of geopolitical tension and uncertainty.
As the founding chair of the ISC, Gilani has continued advocating parliament-to-parliament diplomacy as a mechanism for building trust and improving cooperation among states.
The Senate Secretariat said his participation in international parliamentary forums has helped expand Pakistan’s diplomatic engagement and strengthen institutional ties with legislatures around the world.
The ISC’s latest appreciation, it added, reflects recognition of Pakistan’s continued participation in multilateral parliamentary initiatives focused on peace, dialogue and shared prosperity.
