LAHORE: The Punjab Disaster Management Authority has warned of a severe heatwave in Punjab during the Eidul Azha holidays, with temperatures expected to remain well above normal in several districts.

According to a PDMA spokesperson, temperatures in most parts of the province may stay 4 to 7 degrees Celsius above average, creating health risks for citizens, cattle traders, butchers, livestock handlers and sanitation workers during Eid activities.

In Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Sialkot and nearby areas, temperatures may rise to 42 degrees Celsius. The PDMA said Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan, Sargodha and Jhang could see temperatures reaching up to 50 degrees Celsius.

Authorities also warned that intense heat may continue during nighttime, increasing the risk of dehydration and heat-related illness.

Citizens advised to avoid outdoor exposure

The PDMA advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and outdoor work between 10am and 5pm. Citizens have been urged to drink plenty of water and fluids, wear light-coloured loose cotton clothes, and use caps or umbrellas when going outside.

PDMA Director General Umar Javed said children and elderly people should remain indoors during peak heat hours. He also advised travellers to check tyre pressure and radiator water levels before leaving home.

The authority urged people to use water carefully to avoid shortages and encouraged citizens to place water containers for birds and animals during the extreme heat.

Precautions urged at cattle markets

The PDMA said butchers, cattle traders, livestock handlers and sanitation workers should take special precautions during Eid days. Livestock owners have been advised to provide water to animals frequently and sprinkle water on them to reduce heat stress.

Authorities directed officials to ensure drinking water and temporary shade arrangements at cattle markets set up for Eidul Azha.

DG PDMA Umar Javed said people should learn the symptoms of heatstroke and seek immediate hydration and medical help if needed. He said medical and veterinary camps were being established at cattle markets and public places to respond to emergencies involving both people and animals.

The PDMA advised citizens to contact its helpline 1129 for emergency assistance or heatwave-related information.
