Pakistani documentary The Gymnasts of Fisherman Colony will be screened at the Tribeca Festival in New York City in June, bringing the story of young female gymnasts from Karachi’s Machhar Colony to an international audience.

The film follows a group of girls from one of Pakistan’s largest informal settlements as they face poverty, bureaucratic barriers and statelessness while trying to form a gymnastics team.

The documentary will be screened as part of the festival’s Documentary Competition on June 8 and 9.

Nobel laureate and girls’ education activist Malala Yousafzai has joined the film as an executive producer. She said the documentary highlights the power of sports to change how girls see themselves and how the world sees young women.

Yousafzai joins a production team that includes Emmy winner Mariska Hargitay, Oscar-nominated filmmaker Trish Adlesic and producer Amar Lohana.

Three-time Emmy-winning filmmaker Habiba Nosheen said Malala’s advocacy for girls’ education and her support for girls’ right to play and compete align closely with the film’s message.

Hargitay also welcomed Yousafzai’s involvement, saying the documentary reflects her advocacy for young girls and portrays courage and determination among girls breaking through barriers.
