ISLAMABAD, May 29: Pakistan on Thursday paid tribute to United Nations peacekeepers on the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers 2026, recognizing their role in maintaining global peace and honoring those who lost their lives while serving in UN missions.

In a statement, Pakistan highlighted its more than six decades of participation in UN peacekeeping operations, describing the contribution as a reflection of the country’s long-standing commitment to international peace and security. The observance comes as peacekeeping missions face increasingly complex security, humanitarian and environmental challenges around the world.

Since 1960, more than 237,000 Pakistani peacekeepers have served in UN missions across multiple regions. According to the statement, 183 Pakistani personnel have lost their lives while participating in peacekeeping operations under the UN flag.

Pakistani peacekeepers are currently deployed in several high-risk missions, including the UN operations in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and the Central African Republic. Their responsibilities range from security and stabilization efforts to supporting civilian protection and responding to climate-related challenges.

Evolving challenges for peacekeepers

The statement noted that modern conflict zones have become more complex and unpredictable, with peacekeepers facing a range of emerging threats. These include cyber risks, disinformation campaigns, political instability and climate-driven humanitarian crises.

Referring to the 2026 theme, “Invest in Peace,” Pakistan said the focus reflects a shift from responding to conflicts after they emerge to strengthening measures aimed at preventing violence and preserving stability.

The statement emphasized the need for greater investment in intelligence capabilities, civilian protection systems and climate-resilient operational frameworks to help peacekeeping missions address contemporary challenges more effectively.

Commitment to UN missions

Pakistan reiterated its support for United Nations peacekeeping operations, stating that the government and armed forces remain committed to contributing through training, capacity building and the development of professional peacekeeping capabilities.

The statement added that sustainable peace requires continued international cooperation and long-term investment, reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to supporting global stability, security and humanitarian efforts under the United Nations framework.
