ISLAMABAD, June 4: Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf has called for stronger collective action to address climate change, describing it as one of the most serious challenges facing humanity and stressing the need for coordinated efforts at national and international levels.
In a message issued on World Environment Day 2026, observed globally on June 5, the naval chief said the occasion serves as a reminder of the urgent need to protect the environment and respond to growing climate-related threats. This year’s theme, “A Global Call for Climate Action,” highlights the increasing impact of rising temperatures, sea-level rise, melting glaciers, floods, droughts and extreme weather events on communities and ecosystems worldwide.
Admiral Ashraf said environmental protection is closely linked to economic stability, food security, public health and sustainable development. He noted that governments, institutions, industries and communities must work together to adopt practical solutions that reduce environmental degradation and strengthen resilience against climate-related risks.
Pakistan among countries most affected by climate change
The naval chief said Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change and continues to face environmental challenges including coastal erosion, water scarcity, pollution and an increasing frequency of extreme weather events such as floods, heatwaves and droughts.
He emphasized that protecting natural resources and ecosystems has become a national responsibility requiring sustained commitment and proactive measures.
According to the statement, climate change is a global issue that extends beyond national borders and requires cooperation between developed and developing countries. The naval chief stressed the importance of sharing technology, resources and innovative solutions to help mitigate environmental risks and support climate adaptation efforts.
Pakistan Navy highlights environmental conservation efforts
Admiral Ashraf said Pakistan Navy continues to support national environmental conservation initiatives through coastal and beach cleaning campaigns, environmental awareness programs and community engagement activities aimed at reducing marine pollution and protecting the marine ecosystem.
He also highlighted the Navy’s efforts to conserve and restore mangrove forests along Pakistan’s coastline. Mangroves play an important role in protecting coastal communities from erosion and extreme weather, supporting marine biodiversity and absorbing carbon emissions.
The Pakistan Navy, in collaboration with government organizations, has continued large-scale mangrove plantation drives and coastal conservation projects to strengthen environmental sustainability and climate resilience, the statement said.
Concluding his message, the naval chief urged citizens and institutions to adopt environmentally responsible practices, including reducing pollution, conserving energy and protecting natural habitats, to support a cleaner and more sustainable future.
