KARACHI: Electricity consumers across Pakistan, including Karachi, may face higher power tariffs for three consecutive months under a proposed quarterly adjustment currently under review by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA).
According to NEPRA, electricity prices could increase by Rs1.34 per unit each month for three months under the quarterly tariff adjustment mechanism.
If approved, the proposed increase is expected to place an additional burden of around Rs34 billion on consumers nationwide.
The regulator has reserved its decision on petitions submitted by electricity distribution companies seeking the tariff adjustment. NEPRA will issue its final determination after completing its review of the requests and relevant financial data.
The proposed increase would apply to electricity consumers across the country, including Karachi, subject to the terms and scope of NEPRA’s final decision.
Quarterly tariff adjustments are used to account for changes in power-sector costs over a specified period, with approved amounts subsequently passed on to consumers through electricity bills.
A final decision on the proposed Rs1.34 per unit increase is expected after NEPRA completes its assessment.
