Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China are celebrating the completion of 75 years of diplomatic relations with great joy in both countries. Established on May 21, 1951, this relationship has not only grown stronger with time but has also become a shining example at the regional and global levels. On this occasion, the heads of both nations exchanged congratulatory messages and joint ceremonies were organized. This friendship is described as “stronger than iron,” remaining firmly rooted despite changing circumstances.
Pakistan had the honor of being among the first countries to recognize China shortly after its independence. Both nations have always supported each other’s core interests. The border agreement in the 1960s, Pakistan’s role in facilitating contacts between the United States and China in the early 1970s, and Pakistan’s support during the 1962 Sino-Indian War — these historical facts clearly demonstrate the depth of this relationship.
The Karakoram Highway stands as a living symbol of this friendship, cutting through mountains to connect the two countries. In addition, defense cooperation, joint military exercises, and the supply of weapons have further strengthened mutual trust between the two nations.
In today’s world, these relations are most prominently reflected in the form of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) . Launched in 2013 as a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, it includes Gwadar Port, energy projects, roads, railways, and special economic zones — all of which are proving to be revolutionary for Pakistan’s economic development. China has become Pakistan’s largest investor and trading partner. Cooperation in agriculture, information technology, mining, and industry is rapidly expanding.
However, challenges also exist. Issues concerning the security of Chinese personnel, trade balance, and debt matters are under discussion. Yet both countries have consistently shown determination to resolve these issues through dialogue.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended warm congratulations to the Chinese leadership and people on this occasion. They stated that this friendship is higher than the mountains, deeper than the oceans, and sweeter than honey. Both nations are committed to building a “community of shared future” together.
At the global level, this relationship serves as a splendid example of South-South cooperation. It is vital not only for the two countries but also for the stability and development of the entire region. Even in the face of challenges posed by India, both countries have stood shoulder to shoulder.
This 75-year journey is a story of trust, sacrifice, and shared progress. In the coming years, these ties will grow even stronger and bring greater benefits to the people of both nations. Long live Pak-China friendship!
