GILGIT: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Nawaz Sharif on Tuesday pledged to accelerate development projects in Gilgit-Baltistan if his party forms the next regional government, outlining plans focused on infrastructure, energy, education and youth support ahead of the upcoming elections.
Addressing a public gathering in Gilgit, Nawaz Sharif said development in Gilgit-Baltistan would remain a priority for the PML-N, adding that his party sought public support based on its governance record and development initiatives. He said improved roads, energy projects and economic opportunities were essential for the region’s future growth.
The former prime minister recalled visiting Gilgit and Skardu multiple times during his previous tenures and said several development projects launched by his governments had contributed to the region’s connectivity and infrastructure. He expressed concern over the condition of some roads and questioned delays in the completion of ongoing projects.
Focus on infrastructure and energy
Nawaz Sharif said his government had previously expanded highway networks and worked to address electricity shortages across Pakistan. He credited recent federal initiatives, including solar energy projects, with helping reduce power-related challenges in Gilgit-Baltistan and called for continued investment in the region.
He also said he would raise the issue of improving road connectivity up to the Khunjerab Pass with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, noting Gilgit-Baltistan’s strategic importance as a key route within the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Promises for students and youth
During his address, Nawaz Sharif announced plans to expand educational and youth-focused initiatives, including scholarships, laptop distribution, interest-free business loans and employment opportunities for young people. He said greater economic support should be extended to the region’s youth to help create sustainable livelihoods.
He added that if the PML-N forms the government in Gilgit-Baltistan, he would regularly visit the region to monitor development progress and address public concerns.
Election campaign intensifies
Nawaz Sharif arrived in Gilgit-Baltistan on a one-day visit as the PML-N stepped up campaigning ahead of the region’s general elections scheduled for June 7. The polls were postponed earlier this year due to severe winter conditions.
According to party officials, the Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission granted Nawaz Sharif a no-objection certificate allowing him to visit the region and participate in election campaign activities. During the visit, he met party candidates and senior leaders ahead of the vote.
The PML-N leader was accompanied by several federal ministers and party officials, while local leaders received him upon arrival in Gilgit. The visit is part of the party’s efforts to strengthen support in the region before polling day.
