Murree Mall Road Visitors Hit With Surprise Parking Bills

MURREE: Murree’s iconic Mall Road, one of Pakistan’s busiest tourist attractions, is facing growing complaints from visitors who allege they are being charged excessive parking fees, with some reporting demands ranging from Rs400 to Rs1,000 per hour.

The complaints have raised concerns about tourist protection and local enforcement at a time when the Punjab government is investing heavily in tourism infrastructure, beautification projects and visitor facilities across the province, including Murree.

According to tourists, one of the biggest concerns is the lack of transparency regarding parking charges. Visitors claim that rates are often not communicated clearly when vehicles are parked, only for significantly higher amounts to be demanded when families return to collect their cars.

Some tourists allege they were later informed that the quoted amount applied on an hourly basis rather than for the entire parking duration, leading to unexpected bills and disputes.

The issue is drawing attention because Murree remains one of Pakistan’s most visited tourist destinations, attracting thousands of families every week, particularly during weekends, holidays and the summer season.

Visitors say the experience leaves a negative impression on families who travel to the hill station expecting a relaxing getaway but instead find themselves arguing over parking charges.

The complaints also highlight a wider challenge for tourism authorities. While major investments are being made to improve roads, public spaces and tourist facilities, visitors argue that weak enforcement at the local level is allowing financial exploitation to continue unchecked.

Tourists have urged the district administration to introduce clearly displayed parking rates, mandatory receipts and stricter monitoring of parking operators around Mall Road and other major tourist locations.

Many believe that ensuring transparent and fair parking practices is essential for protecting visitors and maintaining Murree’s reputation as one of the country’s premier tourism destinations.

As the tourist season gains momentum, visitors are calling for immediate action to address the issue before overcharging complaints overshadow ongoing efforts to promote tourism in the region.
