LAHORE: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has obtained British citizenship and a British passport, opening up more opportunities for him in English county cricket and other international leagues.
According to reports, Amir’s wife is a British citizen, and the fast bowler had applied for British citizenship a few years ago. His application has now been approved, granting him formal citizenship.
After receiving British citizenship, Amir will be eligible to play English county cricket as a local player, which could increase his chances of securing contracts with different teams.
Reports also suggest that, as a British citizen, Amir may find it easier to participate in global cricket leagues, including the Indian Premier League.
To retain his Pakistani citizenship, Amir will need to apply for a National Identity Card for Overseas Pakistanis. After obtaining a NICOP, he will also be able to apply for a new Pakistani passport.
