Bollywood actor Kriti Sanon has weighed in on a social media debate over patriarchy, gender inequality and women’s safety amid public outrage surrounding the alleged harassment of two Class 10 students in Bihar’s Jamui.
Sanon did not directly name the Jamui incident in her posts. However, her comments emerged as the case was generating widespread discussion on social media. She questioned the framing of gender-related issues as simply a conflict between men and women, instead pointing to patriarchal attitudes and the normalization of such views.
The Jamui incident reportedly took place on September 19, when a teenage boy and girl were allegedly stopped by a group of men while returning on a two-wheeler. Police and media reports said the two students were subjected to harassment and assault, while footage of the incident later circulated online.
The circulation of the footage prompted widespread outrage and led police to form a Special Investigation Team to identify those allegedly involved. Police subsequently arrested several suspects, including Nandan Yadav, who was injured in a police encounter during efforts to apprehend him, according to police statements reported by Indian media.
Authorities have also investigated the circulation of the footage because it could reveal the identity of a minor victim. Police have warned that sharing material that identifies a minor involved in such a case can result in legal action.
