Shangla, August 1: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Minister for Mines and Minerals Arif Ahmadzai has announced Rs10 million in compensation for the family of each miner from Shangla who lost his life in the recent coal mine accident at Spin Karez (Sorenj), Quetta, while pledging a transparent investigation and stronger mine safety regulations.
During visits to Mian Kallay, Pirabad, and other affected areas of Shangla district, the minister met bereaved families, offered condolences on behalf of the provincial government, and assured them of continued support during their time of grief.
He said the KP government would provide every possible assistance to the affected families and ensure they receive financial aid and welfare support without unnecessary delay.
Offering prayers for the deceased miners, Ahmadzai described the incident as a tragedy not only for the victims’ families but for the entire province and the country. He said the miners had sacrificed their lives while working in hazardous conditions to support their families, adding that ensuring workers’ safety is a fundamental responsibility of both the government and regulatory authorities.
The minister announced that the provincial government would conduct a high-level, transparent, and impartial inquiry into the incident. He said all aspects of the accident would be investigated, and if negligence by any government official, mine operator, or other responsible party is established, strict legal action would be taken.
“We will not treat this as a routine incident. Those responsible will be held accountable, and practical measures will be introduced to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” he said.
Ahmadzai also announced plans to strengthen the mine inspection system and improve enforcement of safety regulations across the mining sector. He said workers’ lives are invaluable and that no compromise would be made on occupational safety.
The condolence visits were attended by several political and community leaders, including Leader of the Opposition in the KP Assembly Dr Ibadullah, MPA Haji Abdul Muneem Khan, former senator Maulana Rahat Hussain, former MPA Afsar-ul-Mulk, and other elected representatives.
Addressing the gatherings, participants called for a comprehensive investigation into the tragedy and urged authorities to ensure those responsible face legal action. They also demanded a long-term rehabilitation package for the victims’ families, including educational support for orphaned children, financial assistance for widows, healthcare, housing support, and sustainable employment opportunities.
Local elders and community representatives highlighted that many residents of Shangla are compelled to work in coal mines due to limited employment opportunities, exposing them to dangerous working conditions. They called for stronger labour protections, modern safety equipment, regular inspections, and strict enforcement of mining safety standards to prevent future accidents.
The meetings concluded with collective prayers for the deceased miners and expressions of solidarity with the bereaved families.
