Karachi has been ranked among the world's least livable cities in the latest Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) livability index, prompting political reaction in Pakistan. According to the report, Karachi placed 170th out of 173 cities, placing it near the bottom of the global rankings.

Following the release of the index, Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) criticised the Sindh government, describing the city’s ranking as a reflection of governance and municipal challenges.

According to a statement cited by local media, an MQM-P spokesperson said deteriorating roads, waste management issues, water shortages, and traffic congestion have affected the quality of life for Karachi residents.

The spokesperson also alleged that the city has been deprived of adequate public services and argued that greater attention to civic infrastructure could have improved Karachi’s standing in international assessments.

EIU Report Places Karachi Near Bottom

The latest Economist Intelligence Unit livability report ranked Karachi 170th among 173 cities evaluated worldwide. The index assesses cities using indicators including stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.

The report’s findings have renewed public discussion about urban infrastructure and municipal services in Pakistan’s largest city.

The Sindh government had not publicly responded to the MQM-P statement at the time of publication.
