KOLKATA — India beat West Indies by five wickets in a Super Eight Group 1 match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Sunday, sealing a semi-final berth with a successful chase of 196 at Eden Gardens. The result keeps India’s title defence on track and eliminates West Indies from contention.

Chasing 196, India reached 199/5 in 19.2 overs, powered by an unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson. The victory sets up a semi-final clash with England in Mumbai on Thursday.

West Indies, put in to bat, posted 195/4 in their 20 overs after recovering from a mid-innings slide. An opening stand between Shai Hope and Roston Chase laid the platform, with the pair guiding the side to 45/0 at the end of the powerplay.

Chase, opening for the first time in a T20 international, scored 40, while Hope made 32 before being bowled by Varun Chakaravarthy. Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in quick succession, removing Shimron Hetmyer (27) and Chase to shift momentum in India’s favour. Hardik Pandya then dismissed Sherfane Rutherford as West Indies slipped from 102/2 to 119/4.

Jason Holder and Rovman Powell counterattacked with a 76-run partnership off 35 balls for the fifth wicket. Powell scored 34 off 19 balls, and Holder added 37 from 22 deliveries, helping West Indies set a competitive target.

In response, India lost wickets at intervals but maintained the required run rate on a batting-friendly surface. Tilak Varma contributed 27, while Suryakumar Yadav added 18. Ishan Kishan and Abhishek Sharma chipped in with 10 runs each.

Samson anchored the chase, finishing unbeaten on 97 — the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup run chase — as India crossed the target in the final over.

With the win, India advanced to the last four of the tournament, where they will face England in Mumbai.
