Renowned Indian filmmaker Imtiaz Ali has revealed that he was once abducted during his college years in Delhi amid tensions linked to student politics.

Speaking to Indian media while promoting his upcoming romantic drama Wapas Aaunga, the 55-year-old director said the incident occurred when he was a student at Hindu College and rival student groups were engaged in intense political disputes on campus.

According to Imtiaz Ali, the episode began over a poster placed on a hostel wall. He said he had requested that the poster be moved from a prominent front-facing wall to a side wall, but the request was ignored. He then removed the poster himself and relocated it.

Ali said the disagreement escalated, and he later became the target of a rival student group. He was allegedly abducted and taken to a deserted government residential quarter, where he was questioned and intimidated before eventually being released.

The filmmaker said the incident left a lasting impression on him, although he did not suffer serious physical harm. He described the episode as one of the most dramatic experiences of his student life.

Imtiaz Ali is best known for directing acclaimed Bollywood films including Jab We Met, Rockstar, Highway, Tamasha, and Amar Singh Chamkila.
