BUDAPEST – Hungarian police have arrested a 30-year-old man accused of stealing human body parts from graves and a hospital where he worked, in a case that has prompted a criminal investigation, according to authorities.

The arrest was made after investigators in Budapest received a tip-off on June 17, leading to the detention of the suspect while he was allegedly storing human remains at his residence, the National Bureau of Investigation said.

Police said the suspect, who worked as a hospital support staff member, is accused of taking body parts from unattended graves and hospital premises over a period of time.

Investigation details

During a search of the suspect’s apartment, investigators reportedly recovered multiple human remains, including a skull, a lower leg, a hand, and bones stored in a suitcase. Authorities also said a human-like facial mask made from skin was seized from the property.

Officials further stated that a jar containing a heart was found, which is now being examined to determine whether it is of human or animal origin.

Confession under investigation

Police said the suspect admitted during questioning to collecting body parts and claimed to have consumed them. Authorities are continuing forensic analysis and further investigation into the case.

The suspect remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
