LAHORE, September 13: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday announced a special petrol relief scheme offering Rs100 per litre support to motorcycle, rickshaw and small-car users as the government moves to cushion households from rising global oil prices linked to tensions in the Middle East.
Under the scheme, owners of motorcycles, auto rickshaws, motorcycle rickshaws and other two- and three-wheelers will be eligible for the subsidy on up to 20 litres of petrol per month, while owners of cars with engine capacities of up to 800cc will receive the same relief on up to 30 litres per month.
“The government fully realizes the burden being faced by the people due to the increase in oil prices. We will not leave the people alone in this difficult hour,” the prime minister said.
Petrol Relief to Begin in Islamabad First
The scheme will initially be implemented in Islamabad from the night of September 14-15, according to the announcement.
It will then be extended across Pakistan, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, from the night of September 16-17.
Registration for the petrol relief scheme opened on Sunday, September 13. The government said details of the registration process would be communicated through a public awareness campaign.
The prime minister thanked provincial governments for providing data on motorcycles, rickshaws and small cars required to identify eligible users under the programme.
The relief measure comes as higher international oil prices add pressure to domestic fuel costs, with the government seeking to target support at commuters and households that rely on motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles for daily transport.
