Hamas relinquishes Gaza

4 Min Read

The announcement by Hamas that it is prepared to relinquish governance of Gaza marks a significant development in the long and bitter conflict. Having ruled the territory for nearly two decades, the group declared that it would hand over administrative responsibilities to the National Committee for the Administration of Gaza, a technocratic body established under Donald Trump’s Board of Peace framework. Hamas officials described the decision as an effort to remove any pretext for continued Israeli occupation, noting that despite the ceasefire in place since October 2025, Gaza has remained under relentless assault.

The humanitarian toll has been staggering. Since the truce began, more than a thousand Palestinians, including children, have been killed. The broader conflict, which escalated after the October 7, 2023 Hamas operation, has left over 73,000 dead and displaced nearly two million people, many of whom continue to suffer without adequate shelter, food, or healthcare. Against this backdrop, Hamas’s move appears intended to shift responsibility onto the United States and Israel to advance the peace process.

Israel, however, has dismissed the announcement as a “trick,” suggesting that Hamas’s refusal to surrender its weapons undermines the credibility of its gesture. There are indications that Tel Aviv may use this as justification to resume military operations, accusing Hamas of failing to honour commitments while continuing its own occupation and targeting of civilians. Reports indicate that Israel now controls around 70 percent of Gaza, a reality that underscores the imbalance in expectations placed on the Palestinian side.

The pattern is familiar. Israel’s allies demand strict adherence to agreements from its adversaries, while Tel Aviv is permitted to act outside the rules under the guise of self‑defence. This double standard has enabled the killing of non‑combatants, including children and the elderly, with little accountability. The hypocrisy threatens to trigger yet another cycle of violence in Gaza, where the population has already endured repeated waves of destruction.

The ongoing devastation has been described as a genocide, a stain on the conscience of humanity. With the backing of Western powers, Israel has been able to continue its occupation and military campaigns largely unchecked. If the architects of the Board of Peace expect Hamas to disarm, they must also insist that Israel end its occupation. Yet Tel Aviv has signalled no intention of doing so, and has even vowed to retain seized Arab land in Lebanon and Syria.

The international community must confront this reality. Calls for peace will remain hollow unless Israel is compelled to vacate occupied territories and respect international law. Hamas’s decision to step back from governance is a test of whether global powers are willing to hold all parties accountable. Without such accountability, Gaza’s people will remain exposed to further violence, and the cycle of suffering will continue.
