A 3–3 draw between Austria and Algeria in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J match has triggered controversy after Iran was eliminated from the tournament, while both sides progressed to the knockout stage.

The result has led to online debate and calls for review from some Iranian supporters, who questioned the flow of the match and its implications. However, no official complaint or investigation has been announced by football authorities so far.

The match, part of the final group-stage fixtures, saw both Austria and Algeria secure qualification, a scenario that ultimately left Iran out of the tournament. The outcome quickly drew attention on social media, where some users compared it to historic World Cup controversies involving group-stage results.

Algerian captain Riyad Mahrez addressed the match afterward, saying the game had unusual phases but insisting both teams continued to compete. He noted that late moments of the match created the decisive outcome that allowed both sides to advance.

Algeria coach Vladimir Petković and Austria coach Ralf Rangnick both rejected any suggestion of prior understanding between the teams, stating that the result reflected normal competition on the field.

Iranian fans, meanwhile, shared clips from the match on social media, claiming certain passages of play lacked intensity. The claims remain unverified.

The match has drawn comparisons with the 1982 “Disgrace of Gijón,” when a controversial result between West Germany and Austria eliminated Algeria from the World Cup.

Austria will now face Spain in the knockout stage, while Algeria are set to meet Switzerland.
