England midfielder Jordan Henderson suffered a wrist injury while celebrating his team’s FIFA World Cup Round of 16 victory over Mexico, adding to England’s growing injury concerns ahead of the quarter-finals.
The incident occurred moments after England secured a dramatic 3-2 win. Henderson reportedly fell while attempting to jump over an advertising board during the post-match celebrations, injuring his wrist in the process.
Henderson taken to hospital after celebration injury
According to reports, Henderson was unable to continue after the fall and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher before being transferred to a hospital for further medical assessment.
England head coach Thomas Tuchel said the initial medical examination suggested the injury could be serious, describing it as an unfortunate setback following the team’s important victory. He added that Henderson remains under the care of the medical staff while further tests are carried out.
Injury adds to England’s selection concerns
The 36-year-old midfielder has played a limited role in the tournament, making only a brief appearance against Panama during the group stage.
Henderson’s injury comes at a difficult time for England, who are already dealing with the absence of Reece James through injury and Jarell Quansah, who is suspended following a red card. The latest setback could further complicate England’s preparations for their quarter-final against Norway.a
