Egypt Records One Birth Every 16 Seconds as Population Reaches 109 Million

Egypt’s population has reached 109 million, with official statistics showing that a child is born in the country almost every 16 seconds.

According to Egypt’s statistics authority, the country added one million people in 267 days after reaching 108 million on August 16, 2025. The latest increase was recorded by May 9, 2026.

The new figures show that the time required for Egypt’s population to grow by one million has shortened. The previous one-million increase took 287 days, compared with 267 days in the latest period.

Official data showed that the average number of daily births rose to 5,439 during the latest period, compared with 5,165 in the previous period.

Between August 16, 2025, and May 9, 2026, Egypt recorded 1.452 million births. This equals around 227 births per hour, or one birth approximately every 15.9 seconds.

The statistics authority also reported a slight increase in daily deaths, which reached 1,694. Previous figures stood at 1,681 and 1,654.

By governorate, Asyut recorded the highest birth rate at 22.8, followed by Sohag, Qena, Minya and Beni Suef.

Port Said recorded the lowest birth rate at 11.4, followed by Dakahlia, Damietta, Gharbia and Suez.

Despite the latest rise in population, official figures indicate that the overall number of births in Egypt has declined over the past five years.
