ISLAMABAD, Oct 12 — China’s Sheng Tang Group has expressed interest in exploring investment opportunities in Pakistan and is seeking to sign a memorandum of understanding worth $10 million, according to the Ministry of Industries and Production.
A delegation from the Chinese group met Adviser to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production Haroon Akhtar Khan in Islamabad, where both sides discussed potential investment across industrial development, infrastructure, tourism, electric vehicles, railways, energy and urban development.
The proposed investment comes as Pakistan seeks to attract greater Chinese participation in industrial and technology-driven sectors while expanding bilateral economic cooperation.
Haroon Akhtar Khan said the government was implementing Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision of deeper economic engagement with China and had been directed to facilitate Chinese investors and improve the ease of doing business.
He said business-friendly regulatory reforms were being introduced to make investment procedures more efficient.
Chinese Group Explores Multiple Investment Sectors
According to the ministry, Sheng Tang Group showed interest in a range of sectors, including infrastructure, tourism, energy, railways and electric vehicle technology.
Haroon Akhtar said Pakistan offered a land-lease model for investors and described the current environment as a suitable time for foreign companies to explore opportunities in the country.
He said Pakistan had demonstrated resilience and reliability internationally and that economic relations with China remained deep and broad-based.
The adviser added that Pakistan and China had already signed a number of joint ventures and memoranda of understanding across different sectors.
40% of China-Pakistan Joint Ventures Enter Implementation Stage
Haroon Akhtar said around 40% of joint ventures agreed with China had entered the implementation stage.
He said greater Chinese investment could help expand industrial activity, stimulate economic growth and create new employment opportunities in Pakistan.
The government, he added, was focused on turning investment agreements into operational projects rather than limiting cooperation to formal commitments.
Electric Vehicles Seen as Next Major Investment Area
Haroon Akhtar identified electric vehicle technology as one of the next major areas of investment in Pakistan.
He said the country was moving rapidly towards EV technology and viewed the sector as an important part of future industrial development.
Pakistan has been seeking greater investment in manufacturing, localisation and technology transfer in the electric mobility sector as part of its wider industrial policy.
During the meeting, Haroon Akhtar assured the Chinese delegation of full government cooperation and presented the visitors with a commemorative souvenir.
Additional Secretary Humaira Zia Mufti, Joint Secretary Faridun Iram Sheikh, Joint Secretary Aamir Aqiq and other officials also attended the meeting.
