China’s city of Kunshan has become home to an 18-storey residential building known as the “Pyramid of Kunshan,” which is gaining widespread attention on social media due to its unusual architectural design.

The structure has drawn interest for its pyramid-like appearance, where two exterior walls are straight while the other two are angled at 45 degrees. This design creates a stepped arrangement of apartments, giving the building its distinctive visual form.

Inspired by traditional landscapes

According to the architectural firm behind the project, the design was inspired by China’s traditional terraced rice fields. The building features apartments with spacious terraces, offering residents open-air views and natural surroundings.

Design praised, but challenges noted

While the building is being highlighted as a modern architectural landmark, experts note that its unconventional structure presents practical challenges. These include complex airflow and natural lighting distribution, as well as potential difficulties in emergency safety planning such as fire response.

Despite these concerns, the Pyramid of Kunshan is being seen as an example of innovative and experimental architecture, reflecting China’s evolving urban design trends.
