LAHORE, May 21, 2026: The Centre for Aerospace and Security Studies (CASS) Lahore organised an academic event titled “The Changing Logic of Mediation in Crisis Environment” on May 20, bringing together academics, intellectuals and domain experts to discuss emerging trends in conflict resolution.
The event opened with remarks by Sibra Waseem, Research Assistant at CASS Lahore.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Marium Fatima said the changing global order had increased the relevance of middle powers in conflict resolution. She highlighted Pakistan’s role as a facilitator in recent regional and international crisis situations and praised the country’s shuttle diplomacy.
Ahmer Bilal Soofi, President of the Research Society of International Law, said the nature of a conflict determines the approach required for its resolution. He discussed coercive and non-coercive mechanisms and stressed the need for Pakistan to institutionalise its growing role as a facilitator in discouraging conflict.
In his concluding remarks, Air Marshal Asim Suleiman (Retd), President CASS Lahore, said contemporary wars had changed the space for traditional bilateral talks. He noted that major powers were increasingly limited in mediation efforts due to their strategic interests, while middle powers were gaining importance because of credibility and accessibility.
He said Pakistan’s improved geopolitical standing had created diplomatic space for Islamabad to contribute to crisis management and mediation efforts.
The event concluded with an interactive session focusing on transnational conflicts, the role of the United States in South Asian conflict management and Pakistan’s geopolitical position.
