ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday said the federal budget for 2026-27 will include measures aimed at providing relief to the public, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to an export-led growth strategy and a broader tax base.
The remarks were made during a meeting with a delegation of leading industrialists and business leaders in Islamabad as part of consultations on the upcoming federal budget and economic growth priorities.
Speaking to the delegation, the prime minister said collaboration between the government and the private sector remained essential for sustainable economic development. He noted that economic policymaking was being carried out in consultation with business stakeholders and said exports would remain a central focus of the country’s growth strategy.
Shehbaz Sharif said the government was taking steps to document the economy, bring more sectors into the tax net and expand the revenue base while ensuring relief measures for citizens in the upcoming budget.
He said recent business-friendly policies had contributed to economic stability and improved investor confidence. He also highlighted the role of industry, agriculture and information technology in supporting economic growth and creating employment opportunities.
Budget consultations with business leaders
During the meeting, government officials briefed participants on ongoing initiatives aimed at promoting industry, trade and investment.
The business delegation welcomed efforts to improve the business environment, including tax reforms, digital payment initiatives and measures supporting a documented economy.
Participants also appreciated steps related to business facilitation, timely tax refunds and reductions in electricity tariffs for industrial consumers.
Focus on skills and economic growth
The prime minister said technical and vocational training programs were being expanded to equip young people with skills needed for employment and economic development.
According to officials, the consultation process is part of the government’s engagement with the private sector ahead of the presentation of the federal budget 2026-27.
The meeting was attended by several prominent business leaders, including Mian Muhammad Mansha, Arif Habib and Aatif Bajwa, among others.
