Big Bash League to Stage First Overseas Match in India as 2026–27 Season Opens in Chennai
The Big Bash League will be played outside Australia for the first time, with the opening match of the 2026–27 season scheduled for Chennai, India. Cricket Australia announced that defending champions Perth Scorchers will face Melbourne Renegades at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on December 12.
The historic fixture marks a major milestone for Australia’s domestic T20 competition and reflects growing cricket ties between Australia and India. Cricket Australia said the event was formally unveiled during a ceremony in Melbourne attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

According to Cricket Australia, both the Australian and Indian governments supported the initiative to bring the season opener to India.
The participating teams are expected to travel to Chennai after the sixth round of the Sheffield Shield, allowing time to prepare before the opening match.

The M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, which has a capacity of around 35,000 spectators, is expected to attract a full crowd, with the Big Bash League enjoying a growing fan base in India.
Cricket Australia also said the move could strengthen opportunities for future international collaboration between domestic T20 leagues. The full 2026–27 Big Bash League schedule and ticket details will be announced at a later date.
