The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has said that planning and selection discussions for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup will remain strictly internal, as speculation continues over the future of senior players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in India’s One Day International (ODI) setup.
The clarification was issued by BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia, who stated that team selection decisions are made through internal consultations involving selectors, the head coach, and other officials. He emphasized that such strategic discussions are not shared publicly, as they form part of long-term planning for Indian cricket.
The statement comes amid ongoing debate in Indian media and cricket circles about whether Kohli and Rohit—both former captains and among India’s most experienced batters—will be part of the squad for the 2027 World Cup. At present, both players are active only in the ODI format, having stepped away from other international formats.
Selection process remains confidential
According to Saikia, team planning involves continuous evaluation of players and performance trends, but the BCCI does not disclose internal deliberations. He added that the focus remains on structured preparation rather than public commentary on selection strategy.
The remarks highlight the board’s position that squad development for major tournaments is handled through closed-door processes to maintain competitive planning and avoid external pressure on selection decisions.
Ongoing uncertainty around senior players
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remain key figures in Indian cricket’s ODI structure, but their long-term roles continue to be a subject of discussion as India prepares for future ICC events.
Neither player has announced retirement from ODIs, and both remain active in international cricket. However, their participation in the 2027 World Cup will depend on form, fitness, and selection policies closer to the tournament.
Cricket analysts in India have repeatedly debated the balance between experienced players and emerging talent as the team looks ahead to the next World Cup cycle.
