ISLAMABAD, August 10, 2026: Bank Alfalah and WWF-Pakistan have launched a mangrove plantation drive under the bank’s Alfa Forest initiative to mark Pakistan’s Independence Day and support coastal ecosystem restoration.
The plantation activity was held at the WWF-Pakistan Wetland Centre in Karachi, where Bank Alfalah employees, WWF-Pakistan representatives, environmental experts and volunteers took part in planting mangroves.
The initiative is part of Bank Alfalah’s broader environmental programme, which links digital banking activity with tree plantation.
According to the bank, more than 1 million of its 1.4 million active Alfa App customers have participated in the Alfa Forest initiative, enabling the plantation of a mangrove tree on their behalf.
The latest plantation drive marks an expansion of the programme from digital customer participation to on-ground environmental activity in partnership with WWF-Pakistan.
Muhammad Yahya Khan, Chief Digital Officer at Bank Alfalah, said the initiative was designed to allow customers to contribute to environmental conservation through everyday digital banking activity.
He said the partnership with WWF-Pakistan was helping translate customer participation into practical conservation work aimed at restoring Pakistan’s coastal ecosystems.
Rab Nawaz, Senior Director Programmes at WWF-Pakistan, said mangrove forests play an important role in protecting coastal areas, capturing carbon, supporting biodiversity and sustaining local livelihoods.
He said partnerships involving businesses and the public could help strengthen long-term environmental conservation efforts.
Mangrove forests are considered an important natural defence against coastal erosion and also support marine biodiversity while acting as carbon sinks.
Through the Alfa Forest programme, Bank Alfalah says it aims to support climate resilience while encouraging greater environmental awareness among customers, employees and communities.
The initiative also forms part of the bank’s wider Environmental, Social and Governance strategy, with a focus on sustainability, community engagement and partnerships linked to environmental protection.
