Arts Council Karachi Hosts Sri Lankan Cultural Dance Show ‘Kanya’

KARACHI: The Arts Council of Pakistan Karachi, in collaboration with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Karachi, hosted the Sri Lankan cultural dance show Kanya at Auditorium I, bringing together diplomats, cultural representatives and art enthusiasts.

The event was organised to promote cultural ties between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and highlight Sri Lanka’s traditional performing arts.

The programme was attended by Arts Council President Mohammad Ahmed Shah, Consul General of Sri Lanka Sanjeewa Pattiwila, diplomats from Bangladesh, Iraq, the United Kingdom, China, Thailand and Afghanistan, FRG Group CEO Mohammad Dochki, Ruwan Wijekoon and other guests.

The ceremony began with the national anthems of Pakistan and Sri Lanka, followed by the traditional Sri Lankan oil lamp lighting ceremony. Organisers said the ceremony symbolised friendship, unity, prosperity and cultural harmony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Ahmed Shah said Pakistan and Sri Lanka share longstanding cordial relations and that cultural exchanges help strengthen mutual understanding between the two countries.

Sri Lankan Consul General Sanjeewa Pattiwila said the event celebrated the enduring friendship between Pakistan and Sri Lanka. He said Kanya showcased the colours, traditions and artistic spirit of Sri Lankan culture.

The performance was led by renowned Sri Lankan choreographer and dance director Chandana Wickramasinghe. The troupe presented several dance pieces, including Ukusa, Naga Raksha, Ragum Gee, Radhamanjali, Peacock, Thelme, Hoiya Hoiya, Ridhma Rata, Abhisheka, Salina Lelina and Rathna Deepa Janmabhoomi.

The audience applauded the performances, which combined traditional Sri Lankan dance forms with contemporary artistic expression.
