GILGIT, July 6, 2026: Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Amjad Hussain Advocate was sworn in as the new Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister on Monday after being elected unopposed following the party’s victory in the 2026 regional elections.
Gilgit-Baltistan Governor Syed Mehdi Shah administered the oath during a ceremony in Gilgit attended by senior PPP leaders, elected representatives and other dignitaries. Amjad Hussain becomes the fifth chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Addressing the ceremony, the newly sworn-in chief minister thanked the people of Gilgit-Baltistan for their support in the June 7 elections, saying the PPP had emerged as the largest political party in the region.
He acknowledged the participation of young voters and women in the electoral process and said the party’s candidates had secured the confidence of the electorate across multiple constituencies.
Amjad Hussain said the latest election results reflected the public’s continued trust in the PPP and described the party’s relationship with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan as spanning three generations. He also noted that the party had secured a significant mandate in Diamer for the first time.
The chief minister thanked the PPP leadership for its support and also appreciated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leadership for facilitating the formation of the new regional government.
Amjad Hussain, who was elected from the GBA-1 constituency, secured the chief minister’s office unopposed after no other candidate submitted nomination papers for the position. He currently serves as president of the PPP’s Gilgit-Baltistan chapter.
