Ali Khamenei Funeral Expected on July 5 as Iranian Media Outlines Ceremony Schedule

Iranian media have released details of the expected funeral arrangements for former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stating that funeral prayers are likely to be held on Sunday, July 5, with senior Shiite clerics expected to lead ceremonies in several cities.

According to Iranian media reports, funeral prayers in Tehran are expected to take place after the Fajr prayer at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla. The reports say the ceremony could draw millions of mourners, along with official delegations from around 100 countries, before the funeral procession moves to the city of Qom.

Public Viewing and Funeral Procession

Iranian media said the funeral rites began at the Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla, where international delegations visited to offer condolences and pay their respects.

The reports added that the coffins were placed on public display on July 4, allowing mourners from across Iran to attend prayers and offer tributes throughout the day.

Following the funeral prayers in Tehran, the procession is expected to continue to Qom. The following day, the remains are reportedly scheduled to be taken to the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Karbala for additional funeral prayers before returning to Iran.

According to the reported schedule, the burial is planned for July 9 at the shrine of Imam Reza in Mashhad.

Clerics Expected to Lead Funeral Prayers

Iranian media reported that funeral prayers in different cities will be led by prominent Shiite religious scholars.

The Tehran funeral prayer is expected to be led by Ja’far Sobhani, while ceremonies in Qom are reportedly scheduled to be led by Naser Makarem Shirazi. In Mashhad, the funeral prayer is expected to be led by Hossein Nouri Hamedani.

No Confirmation on Mojtaba Khamenei’s Attendance

Iranian media said there has been no official confirmation regarding whether Mojtaba Khamenei will attend the funeral.

According to a report attributed to BBC Persian, an official involved in the funeral arrangements said any decision regarding his attendance would be announced by the family if confirmed.
