SWABI: More than 82% of Afghan refugees in Swabi have returned to Afghanistan under an ongoing government-led repatriation process, with officials saying the phased operation is continuing smoothly and without forced evictions.

Out of 42,061 registered refugees previously residing in camps across the district, 34,758 have so far been repatriated. The Afghan refugee repatriation process is being carried out in phases under the federal policy for undocumented and Afghan Citizen Card (ACC) holders, with authorities facilitating returns in coordination with the UNHCR.

The repatriation reflects a broader national effort to manage refugee populations while ensuring voluntary, orderly and dignified returns.

Deputy Commissioner Dr. Tariq Ullah said all necessary arrangements are in place to support returning families, including transport and on-ground facilitation.

Camp-wise progress

In Gandaf Camp, 15,186 individuals have returned, including 936 in recent days. Barkai Camp has recorded 19,572 departures so far.

A total of 7,303 refugees remain in the district. Of these, 6,964 individuals from 976 families are still residing in Gandaf Camp, while 339 individuals from 250 families remain in Barkai Camp awaiting repatriation.

Monitoring and facilitation

Officials said monitoring teams have been deployed at transit points to ensure smooth movement and address issues faced by families during the return process.

Authorities reiterated that the repatriation remains voluntary, with no forced evictions, and that efforts are focused on maintaining order and dignity throughout the process.
