ISLAMABAD: Toyota’s next-generation Fortuner has been spotted undergoing road tests in Thailand, with camouflaged prototypes suggesting a major exterior redesign inspired by the latest Toyota Hilux.

The upcoming SUV, widely expected to arrive in 2027, could feature a more aggressive front design, upgraded interior technology and improved safety systems while retaining much of its existing mechanical configuration.

However, Toyota has not officially unveiled the new Fortuner or confirmed its specifications, launch date or availability in Pakistan.

According to automotive platform PakWheels, recent spy photographs indicate that the redesigned Fortuner could adopt several styling elements from the latest Hilux pickup.

The publication has also produced artificial intelligence-generated images based on the camouflaged test vehicles. These images are unofficial interpretations rather than leaked photographs of the production model.

2027 Toyota Fortuner expected to feature sharper exterior design

The most noticeable changes are expected at the front, where the new Fortuner could receive slimmer headlights, a larger grille, a flatter bonnet and a more upright bumper.

These changes would give the SUV a stronger, more rugged appearance while bringing its styling closer to Toyota’s latest Hilux.

Despite the expected front-end redesign, the vehicle’s overall body proportions may remain familiar.

Spy photographs suggest that the doors, window line and rear-quarter design could retain elements of the existing Fortuner.

The SUV is also expected to maintain its high ground clearance, prominent wheel arches, side steps and traditional body-on-frame construction.

At the rear, redesigned tail lamps, a cleaner tailgate and updated bumper styling could provide a more modern appearance.

Interior could receive major technology upgrades

Although clear photographs of the production interior have not yet emerged, the next Fortuner is expected to receive significant improvements to its cabin.

Possible upgrades include a larger touchscreen infotainment system, digital instrument cluster, improved centre console and updated climate controls.

The SUV could also gain a 360-degree camera system, enhanced connectivity features and more advanced driver-assistance technologies.

An updated version of Toyota Safety Sense may also be introduced in selected markets, potentially offering improved adaptive cruise control, lane assistance and other safety features.

These changes would help the Fortuner compete with newer SUVs offering advanced technology and modern interiors.

However, the equipment and features remain speculative until Toyota releases official details.

Toyota Fortuner may retain 2.8-litre diesel engine

Despite the expected styling and technology upgrades, the new Fortuner could continue using Toyota’s established 2.8-litre 1GD-FTV turbo-diesel engine.

Reports also suggest that a 48-volt mild-hybrid system may be offered in selected markets to improve efficiency and driving refinement.

Unlike a full hybrid system, mild-hybrid technology provides electrical assistance to the conventional engine rather than allowing substantial electric-only driving.

The continued use of established diesel technology could appeal to buyers in Pakistan, where the Fortuner is valued for durability, off-road capability and resale value.

The latest Hilux also provides clues about Toyota’s future powertrain strategy.

Toyota has introduced the ninth-generation Hilux in Thailand with plans for multiple powertrain options, including diesel, battery-electric and eventually hydrogen fuel-cell technology in selected markets.

Its battery-electric prototype features a 59.2 kWh battery and dual electric drive units.

However, these Hilux powertrain options have not been confirmed for the next Fortuner.

When will the 2027 Toyota Fortuner launch in Pakistan?

Toyota has not announced an official launch date for the redesigned Fortuner.

Nevertheless, continued testing in Thailand has increased expectations that the SUV could make its global debut during 2027.

There is also no confirmed launch schedule for Pakistan.

Even after an international unveiling, the vehicle’s introduction in the Pakistani market would depend on local assembly arrangements, parts availability, regulatory approvals and pricing decisions.

The existing Fortuner remains a popular choice among buyers seeking a seven-seat SUV with strong off-road capability and an established resale market.

If the anticipated changes materialise, the upcoming model could offer a more modern design and improved technology without abandoning the mechanical characteristics associated with the Fortuner.

For now, the final design, specifications, prices and launch timeline remain subject to official confirmation from Toyota.
