PESHAWAR: World Environment Day 2026 was marked in Peshawar with the launch of Fitrat-e-Muhafiz, a collection of environmentally themed stories for children aimed at promoting climate awareness through literature and creative expression.
The event was organized by the Culture Literature Arts and Development Organization (CLADO) with support from the Directorate of Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Participants highlighted the role of storytelling and cultural initiatives in encouraging environmental responsibility among young people.
The newly launched anthology features 20 eco-themed short stories written by authors from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to organizers, the project is part of ongoing efforts since 2024 to bring together writers, educators and youth to promote children’s literature and environmental awareness.
Writers associated with the publication, including Nazia Nazir, Dr. Mehmood, Fawad Anwar and Kulsoom Zeb, shared their perspectives on literature, environmental challenges and youth engagement. They emphasized the importance of storytelling as a tool for educating younger generations about environmental protection.
Focus on youth engagement and environmental awareness
Muhammad Usman, District Youth Officer Peshawar, said the Directorate of Youth Affairs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to support initiatives focused on youth development, empowerment and awareness-building through literary and cultural activities.
Abdul Rehman, Chief Executive Officer of CLADO, spoke about the organization’s efforts to engage young people through literature, arts and cultural programmes. He also highlighted the role of the Peshawar Literary Festival in promoting youth participation and creative expression.
Literature highlighted as a tool for climate awareness
Shahab U Din, Lead of the Peshawar Literary Festival, discussed the impact of climate change and stressed the importance of empowering young people to contribute to environmental protection efforts.
Dr. Raj Muhammad Afridi, President of Adabiyat-e-Atfal Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, welcomed the initiative and underscored the value of children’s literature in building environmental consciousness. He noted that collaborative literary projects have helped strengthen connections between youth engagement and environmental education.
The event concluded with the distribution of shields among distinguished guests and certificates for volunteers of the Peshawar Literary Festival Season III. A cake-cutting ceremony was also held to celebrate the “Colors of the Peshawar Literary Festival.”
