Saudi Arabia’s national flag was displayed differently from other flags before the team’s FIFA World Cup match against Uruguay in Miami because of religious and cultural protocol linked to the flag’s design.
During the pre-match ceremony, national flags are usually placed horizontally on the pitch. However, the Saudi flag was kept raised above the ground to ensure it did not touch the field.
The special arrangement drew attention from fans and social media users, many of whom praised the organisers for respecting the flag’s religious and national significance.
Saudi Arabia’s flag carries the Shahada, the Islamic declaration of faith. Because of this, the flag is treated with particular care and is not placed in positions where it may be stepped on, damaged or viewed as being handled disrespectfully.
Organisers therefore displayed the Saudi flag from a raised position instead of laying it on the ground with the other flags. The arrangement was made to preserve the dignity of the flag during the ceremony.
Reports said Uruguay’s flag was also held above the pitch to maintain balance in the presentation.
Saudi authorities have previously emphasised that the national flag should not be used on items or in settings where it could be disrespected, damaged or placed underfoot.
Saudi Arabia and Uruguay met in their Group H opener at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Miami, where the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
