KARACHI: Sindh Senior Minister and Provincial Minister for Transport Sharjeel Inam Memon has clarified the eligibility requirements for women seeking free Pink Electric Scooties under the provincial government’s mobility programme.
Memon said women holding only a learner’s driving licence will not be eligible for a scooter. According to him, applicants must have a permanent driving licence and pass the required driving test to qualify.
He said the Pink Electric Scooty programme has generated significant interest among women across Sindh. More than 50,000 women have reportedly applied for the scheme and related training, while the provincial government has already provided driving and related training to more than 2,000 women.
Memon said that if all 50,000 applicants eventually qualify, the Sindh government would provide scooters to them, subject to the programme’s eligibility and selection process.
The minister also warned that scooters provided under the scheme are intended for use by the female beneficiaries. He said the government had received complaints about scooters being repainted and used by men, adding that surprise inspections would be conducted and scooters could be confiscated if found being operated by men.
The Pink Electric Scooty programme is being expanded to different parts of Sindh. More than 810 scooters had already been distributed free of cost by the end of August, including 410 in Karachi, 200 in Sukkur and 200 in Hyderabad.
The Sindh government has described the programme as an initiative aimed at improving women’s mobility and access to safer transportation. The programme also includes driving training for applicants.
