UNITED NATIONS, September 25 — The United Nations Security Council on Friday strongly condemned continuing Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia amid escalating tensions in the region.
In a joint statement delivered by France’s UN Ambassador Jérôme Bonnafont, who holds the rotating presidency of the Security Council this month, Council members condemned attacks affecting civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia.
The Council said the attacks had resulted in injuries to civilians, including women and children.
The statement marked a rare display of consensus among Security Council members as the conflict involving Yemen’s Houthis and Saudi Arabia has intensified.
The latest condemnation follows a series of missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi territory. Earlier in September, attacks affected cities including Abha, Khamis Mushait, Jizan and Najran, leaving dozens of civilians injured and damaging civilian and energy infrastructure, according to statements delivered at the Security Council.
Recent Houthi attacks have also raised concerns over regional energy infrastructure and maritime security around the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb, important routes for international shipping and energy supplies.
The Security Council’s latest statement comes amid international calls for restraint and efforts to prevent further escalation in Yemen and the wider region.
