ABBOTTABAD: Tensions have escalated in Abbottabad after the Tehsil Municipal Administration (TMA) demolished cabins at the local vegetable market on the directives of the district administration, prompting traders to announce a strike over alleged financial losses and displacement concerns.
According to details, Assistant Commissioner Headquarters along with TMO and other staff carried out the operation, removing cabin structures in the vegetable market area. Officials have not yet issued a detailed public statement on the action.
Traders protest demolition
The president of Anjuman Aarthiyan New Sabzi Mandi, Naeemullah Khan, strongly criticised the operation, claiming that hundreds of shopkeepers have been affected. He alleged that the cabins were constructed decades ago and that traders had invested significant resources in the market infrastructure over time.
He further claimed that the action was taken without adequate consideration for the livelihoods of affected vendors, calling it a violation of their rights and dignity.
Strike announced
Traders announced a shutter-down strike starting Friday, stating that 56 shopkeepers would keep their businesses closed until their demands are met and alleged financial losses are addressed. They warned that the protest would continue if compensation and resolution were not provided.
The traders’ body has demanded an inquiry into the operation and called for action against district and municipal officials involved, urging higher authorities including the Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take notice.
Administrative stance awaited
The district administration and TMA have not yet issued a detailed response to the traders’ allegations. The situation remains tense as both sides hold firm on their positions.
