This Popular Home Remedy May Irritate Your Skin

Share f X WA in

Many people use creams and face masks to care for their facial skin but often overlook their hands and feet. Exposure to sunlight, dust, dryness and everyday household tasks can leave the skin looking dull and rough.

Traditional home remedies often use common kitchen ingredients to improve the appearance of the skin. However, not every natural ingredient is safe or proven to brighten skin tone.

Ingredients Used in the Traditional Remedy

The mixture described in the traditional recipe includes:

  • Lemon juice

  • Tomato juice

  • Potato juice

  • Onion juice

  • One tablespoon of baking soda

  • A small amount of turmeric

  • Yogurt

  • Rose water

How Is the Mixture Prepared?

  1. Extract the juice from the lemon, tomato, potato and onion.

  2. Add the baking soda, turmeric, yogurt and rose water.

  3. Mix the ingredients until they form a paste.

  4. The traditional method involves applying the mixture to the hands and feet before rinsing it off with water.

Important Skin-Care Precautions

Although this recipe is traditionally used for skin care, there is limited scientific evidence that the mixture can lighten skin or reliably improve its appearance.

Lemon juice can irritate the skin and increase sensitivity to sunlight. Baking soda may disrupt the skin’s natural protective barrier, while onion juice and other ingredients can also cause irritation or allergic reactions.

For safer everyday care, use a gentle moisturiser and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to exposed hands. Avoid applying the mixture to broken, inflamed or sensitive skin, and discontinue use if irritation occurs.

Remember: Natural does not automatically mean safe. Consistent moisturising and sun protection are more reliable ways to maintain healthy-looking hands.
