Swat Zoo faces closure risk amid funding uncertainty

SWAT: The Swat Zoo, a Rs1.70 billion project established in Kanju Township, is facing the possibility of closure after the provincial government reportedly did not approve an extension of the project or provide operational funding, raising concerns about the future of its animals, birds, and workforce.

The facility, which opened to the public in July 2025, houses dozens of animal species and hundreds of birds. Officials and local stakeholders warn that unless a decision is made before June 30, the zoo’s operations could be suspended, affecting tourism, employment, and animal care in the region.

The project, launched in 2021, includes zoos in Kanju Township and Malam Jabba, spread over a combined area of more than 100 kanals. The Kanju facility currently houses around 70 species of animals and approximately 400 birds, along with a public park and recreational attractions.

According to sources, a committee led by the current Chief Secretary, Shahab Ali Shah, had previously approved annual operational support for the project. However, zoo management is now seeking approval for an annual grant of Rs31 million and an extension of the project period to ensure continued operations.

Revenue generated but future remains uncertain

Sources said the zoo generated approximately Rs36 million in revenue over the past year. Despite this, the facility’s future remains uncertain due to the lack of formal approval for continued funding and project extension.

Officials fear that failure to secure government support could result in the closure of the zoo, placing nearly 100 employees at risk of losing their jobs. The workforce includes veterinarians, animal caretakers, administrative staff, and other personnel responsible for the facility’s daily operations.

Concerns over animal welfare and tourism

The possible closure has also raised questions about the welfare and management of the animals and birds housed at the zoo.

Residents and community representatives have urged the provincial government to take immediate steps to approve the project’s extension and provide the necessary financial support. They argue that the zoo has become an important recreational and tourism destination and contributes to the local economy.

The Swat Zoo is considered the first major facility of its kind in the region and attracts visitors from across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country.
