Bollywood comedian and actor Rajpal Yadav has faced a strong reprimand from the Supreme Court of India for failing to deposit money despite a court order in a cheque-bounce case.

According to reports, the court had given Yadav two weeks to deposit INR 20 million (Rs2 crore), but the payment was not made within the stipulated period.

During the hearing, Rajpal Yadav’s lawyer reportedly argued that the complainant was not poor. Justice Joymalya Bagchi responded sharply, saying the lawyer should know when to speak and reportedly remarked, “You should know when to speak. Your place is in jail.”

The Supreme Court has now ordered Rajpal Yadav to deposit the required amount by Tuesday.

The case relates to financial assistance of INR 50 million (Rs5 crore) obtained in 2010 for a film project. The dispute reportedly arose after cheques issued in connection with the financial arrangement were dishonoured.

The latest court proceedings have once again brought the long-running financial dispute involving the actor into the spotlight.
