Former Pakistan cricket captain Shahid Afridi visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York, where he met Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad.
The visit highlighted the role of sports diplomacy in promoting goodwill, dialogue and international cooperation. Afridi was invited by Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations and was briefed on the UN’s work in peace, security, sustainable development and multilateral engagement.
During the visit, Afridi was given a tour of the UN Headquarters. Officials briefed him on the organisation’s role in addressing global issues through cooperation among member states.
Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad welcomed Afridi and praised his contribution to Pakistan cricket. He said Afridi’s all-round performances, aggressive batting and powerful stroke play had brought recognition to Pakistan and inspired cricket fans around the world.
The ambassador also appreciated Afridi’s humanitarian and welfare initiatives, particularly his work for underserved communities.
During the meeting, Asim Iftikhar said sports can serve as an effective platform for building understanding among people and nations. He said sporting figures can help promote peace, goodwill and cooperation beyond national borders.
The ambassador also briefed Afridi on the work of Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the UN, including its efforts to advance dialogue, diplomacy, multilateralism and international peace and security.
Afridi thanked Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad and the Pakistan Mission for the invitation and hospitality. He also appreciated the mission’s role in promoting understanding, dialogue and cooperation at the international level.
The visit concluded with a dinner hosted by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad in Afridi’s honour. Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, officials of the Pakistan Mission and other guests also attended.
