Chinese PhD Scholar Defends AI Cancer Research Thesis at CUI

ISLAMABAD, August 10, 2026: A Chinese PhD scholar at COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has successfully defended a doctoral thesis focused on using advanced artificial intelligence techniques to analyse complex biological data for cancer research.

Ma Yinghua, a PhD scholar in the Department of Computer Science at CUI’s Abbottabad Campus, defended her thesis through an online doctoral examination conducted by the university on Monday.

Her research, titled “A Deep Manifold Learning for Multi-Omics Data Integration and Analysis,” explores how deep manifold learning can be used to integrate and analyse multiple forms of biological data, including genomics, transcriptomics and proteomics.

The research has potential applications in cancer detection and classification, prognosis assessment and precision medicine, according to the university.

The thesis was supervised by Dr Ahmad Khan, Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at CUI Abbottabad Campus.

The doctoral examination panel included national and international experts from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pak-Austria Fachhochschule: Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology, Edith Cowan University in Australia and Politecnico di Torino in Italy.

During the defence, Ma Yinghua presented her research findings and responded to questions on the study’s methodology, results and academic contribution.

CUI Rector Prof. Dr Raheel Qamar attended the examination along with senior university officials, including the Controller of Examinations, the Chairperson of the Department of Computer Science and the Dean of the Faculty of Information Science and Technology.

The university said the online examination format enabled participation by international academic experts while maintaining its prescribed procedures for doctoral assessment.
