Shaheen Afridi Eyes Test Return, Names Red-Ball Cricket His Top Priority

KARACHI: Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has expressed his determination to return to the national Test side, saying red-ball cricket remains his first priority as he prepares to play domestic first-class cricket.

Afridi will feature in the President’s Trophy, marking his first first-class appearance in Pakistan in nearly seven years. The return gives the fast bowler an opportunity to build match fitness and push for a place in Pakistan’s Test squad.

The 26-year-old said he has always enjoyed the longer format but had limited opportunities to play first-class cricket because of Pakistan’s demanding international schedule.

He believes spending more time in domestic red-ball cricket can strengthen a bowler’s confidence while also helping improve line and length.

Afridi, who has recently been out of Pakistan’s Test side, is now looking to use his performances in first-class cricket to earn a return to the national squad.

The left-arm fast bowler said he intends to approach his domestic matches in much the same way as he has approached Test cricket, focusing on maintaining his bowling discipline and consistency.

Afridi also enters the President’s Trophy after a strong showing in the recent Champions Cup. He was among the tournament’s leading bowlers and took seven wickets in the final to help Pakistan Gold secure the title.

His return to domestic red-ball cricket provides an opportunity to build his case for a Test comeback through sustained performances in the longer format.
