RAWALPINDI, November 1, 2026: Road rehabilitation work has begun in Rawalpindi under a Rs6.5 billion development programme aimed at improving major roads and easing traffic congestion. However, the reconstruction of the severely damaged Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road remains on hold pending official approval.

The Punjab Highway Department has been assigned the rehabilitation of 18 roads, including nine under the Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation and nine under the District Council. Work has started on nine roads, while administrative approval for Bostan Khan Road remains incomplete.

The two local bodies have collectively allocated Rs6.5 billion for the rehabilitation programme, which covers several important routes used by thousands of commuters across Rawalpindi.

Bostan Khan Road reconstruction faces delays

Despite the launch of road improvement projects, Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road continues to face delays after nearly three years of deteriorating conditions.

The 4.4-kilometre road connects Grand Trunk Road near the Lahore High Court’s Rawalpindi Bench with Ammar Chowk in Chaklala Scheme III.

It serves as an important link for commuters travelling between Media Town, Bahria Town, Gulraiz, Saddar and Raja Bazaar.

Residents say the road’s damaged surface, deep potholes and broken sections have made daily travel increasingly difficult.

Traffic congestion has become a frequent problem, while rainfall further worsens conditions for motorcyclists, car drivers and public transport operators.

Despite repeated concerns over the road’s condition, its reconstruction has yet to receive the required administrative approval.

Major Rawalpindi roads included in rehabilitation plans

The district administration has reviewed rehabilitation plans covering several important roads across Rawalpindi.

These include:

  • Khayaban-e-Sir Syed Road
  • Bokra Road
  • Fifth Road
  • Rawal Road
  • Chandni Chowk to Commercial Market Road
  • Railway Workshop Road
  • China Market to Gordon College Road
  • 4-B Road
  • Band Khana Road

Development and road improvement projects in Taxila, Kallar Syedan, Gujar Khan and Kahuta were also discussed during the review.

The rehabilitation programme is intended to improve road surfaces, strengthen transport connectivity and address infrastructure problems affecting motorists.

Rawalpindi administration reviews development schemes

Rawalpindi Deputy Commissioner Nadeem Nasir recently chaired a meeting to review progress on 21 development schemes with an estimated combined cost exceeding Rs6.52 billion.

Officials informed the meeting that 18 schemes had received approval, while the remaining projects were awaiting completion of administrative procedures.

The meeting was also informed that Rs7.5 billion was available for development projects.

The deputy commissioner directed the relevant departments and contractors to complete approved work within the prescribed timelines.

He emphasised regular inspections, improved coordination between departments and timely resolution of pending administrative matters to prevent unnecessary delays.

Officials were instructed to monitor construction progress and ensure that development schemes proceed according to approved schedules.

Commuters await improvements on damaged roads

The rehabilitation programme is expected to improve travelling conditions on several major routes across Rawalpindi.

However, residents and motorists using Chaudhry Bostan Khan Road will have to wait until the reconstruction project receives approval and construction work begins.

The continued delay remains a concern for commuters who depend on the road for daily travel between residential areas, commercial centres and major connecting routes.

With rehabilitation already underway on nine roads, attention is now focused on the remaining approvals and the administration’s ability to complete the projects within the announced timelines.
