BEIJING: BYD is set to launch the second-generation Seagull on October 20, bringing major changes to the compact electric vehicle, including larger dimensions and the addition of LiDAR-backed advanced driver-assistance technology.

The model, sold as the Dolphin Mini or Surf in some international markets, has already opened for blind pre-orders ahead of its official debut.

The new Seagull will be offered in six exterior colour options. Its front end adopts a closed-grille design, complemented by sharp, multi-faceted lines and polygonal light clusters.

A LiDAR sensor mounted on the roof points to a significant upgrade in the vehicle’s advanced driver-assistance system, or ADAS, capabilities.

Along the sides, the redesigned Seagull features semi-concealed door handles, gloss-black wheels and a hidden B/C/D-pillar treatment. At the rear, the vehicle receives a revised taillight assembly and a prominent diffuser panel.

The second-generation model is also notably larger than the outgoing Seagull.

It measures 4,205 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width and 1,570 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,650 mm.

Compared with the current model, the new Seagull is 425 mm longer, while its wheelbase has grown by 150 mm.

The cabin has also undergone a redesign. A larger central touchscreen dominates the dashboard, while the traditional instrument cluster has been removed.

Despite the more digital layout, BYD has retained selected physical controls for ease of use. The interior also includes a wireless charging pad, a larger central storage area and a new minimalist two-spoke steering wheel.

The all-new Seagull remains a pure electric vehicle and is powered by a permanent magnet synchronous motor, model TZ164XYB, manufactured by Zhengzhou BYD Auto Co., Ltd.

The motor produces a maximum output of 95 kW, equivalent to 127 horsepower.

The vehicle is expected to use BYD’s second-generation lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, which supports flash charging. Both the battery cells and battery assembly are manufactured by Shaoxing FinDreams Battery Co., Ltd.

The current-generation BYD Seagull recorded sales of 83,604 units from January through September 2026, representing a 66% year-on-year decline, according to China EV DataTracker.
