Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan says her family background has opened doors for her in the film industry, but she believes the debate over nepotism often overshadows her hard work.

Mumbai, October 28, 2026: Bollywood actress Sara Ali Khan has spoken candidly about the advantages and challenges of belonging to a prominent film family, saying she did not have a father or godfather who would personally approach filmmakers to secure roles for her.

Sara comes from a well-known Bollywood family. Her grandmother, Sharmila Tagore, and her parents, Amrita Singh and Saif Ali Khan, are established names in the Indian film industry.

In a recent interview, the actress acknowledged that being a star kid gave her access, recognition and fame. However, she said the expectations associated with her background can sometimes be overwhelming.

Sara Acknowledges the Privileges of Being a Star Kid

Sara said she was neither unaware of nor ungrateful for the advantages her family background had provided.

She acknowledged that her connections helped open doors in Bollywood, but argued that the constant discussion surrounding nepotism can overshadow the effort actors put into their careers.

According to Sara, actors such as Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday and herself did not choose the families into which they were born.

She suggested that while their backgrounds may have provided opportunities, their work should not be overlooked simply because they come from film families.

‘I Had No Godfather in the Industry’

Explaining the challenges she faced, Sara said she lives with her mother and did not have a father who would visit filmmakers’ offices, negotiate contracts or personally request that producers cast her in their films.

She described the situation as a double-edged sword: her family background provided visibility and access, but she believes she did not have a godfather actively lobbying for her roles.

Her remarks highlight the ongoing debate over nepotism in Bollywood, where the influence of established film families and the opportunities available to newcomers remain subjects of discussion.

Sara’s comments underline her view that family connections can offer an initial advantage, but should not be the only measure by which an actor’s work and efforts are judged.
